Apple was responsible for the impactful shift in music. “Bringing your entire music collection with you was practically unthinkable before the iPod. At the time the iPod was introduced, if someone wanted to carry their whole library — let's say around 200 CDs — the best option was a portable CD player that worked with MP3 CDs” (Costello, 2019). Before Apple stepped into the MP3 scene, I owned a small SONY MP3 player that required you to carry a few small floppy disks with you. The first iPod was released in 2001 and we went through six generations of iPods before the iPhone was released in 2007 (Gartenberg, 2016). Itunes brought us a place to download, store, and buy new music legally. Before, pirating music and movies was a part of our culture because trying to buy the latest CDs wasn’t affordable for all of my friends. Sites like Limewire allowed users to download unlimited songs onto their computer. Now we can carry over 50,000 songs in our pockets. Apple laid the framework and now our music and movies are completely portable.
The internet is responsible for the drastic shift in our consumption of movies. “The movie business has had to adapt to the changes the Internet has brought, and is still adapting” (How the Internet Changed, 2019). A media-service provider called Netflix was introduced to us as a one of a kind streaming service that created its own platform for streaming original content. Before Netflix, pirating movies and buying them “bootleg” was a very popular act. When Apple allowed us to buy movies and Netflix was introduced, Limewire and “bootleg” movies became obsolete for most. “Netflix’s impact on how we consume television is unavoidable. The TV landscape is littered with streaming sites now, all competing with traditional TV and Netflix. Amazon Prime has its own original division with shows” (Lakare, 2018). Online streaming services have completely changed the way we consume movies and music.
